Fun facts

• They are the largest rodents in the world. An adult capybara can weigh between 35 and 65 kg.
• They are excellent swimmers. Their feet have webbed toes that help them move through water with ease.
• They can hide almost fully underwater. Their eyes, ears and nostrils sit on top of the head, so they can watch and breathe while the rest of the body stays submerged.
• They are strict herbivores. Their diet is mostly grasses, aquatic plants, leaves and other vegetation.
• They are highly social animals. They usually live in groups and communicate with a range of sounds: whistles, squeals, barks and purrs.

They can be found across countries like Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia and Peru, among others.
